Two things will save Architecture from what I can only explain as a form of professional 'Golem Effect'...
1. Art and 2. Vitality
With the new year placed firmly upon us - folks get obsessive about change - and the dominant topic of conversation = tech and how it is going to vastly alter the landscape of (topic here)... This is inarguable. However, we have already witnessed several profound changes... and that is (a) time - in terms of the sheer speed + productivity. (b) quality and the massively transforming field of craft, and (c) the integrity of the profession. The (perceived) science is dictating the direction of the profession and therefore the relativity of both progress and reputation. Architecture in modern culture is perceived as merely the act of building + developing.
However, Architecture is art. And that is not only the saving grace of the profession but also the single most significant factor to the permanency of 'pure' architecture. The ethos of architecture is Art + Science. Without one - the other deteriorates and therefore so does the soul of the institution. The future is in returning to the integration of art - not rejecting it for the sake of efficiency.
Data cannot replace art and the primordial nature of architecture stands.
