Description ::
 - Located on highly visible site shared with school facilities, the 50,000 SF facility offers a variety of recreation amenities. Design inspiration came from the steeply sloped site, human body and city’s mineral water heritage.
 - Rather than flatten the sloped site, activity zones were organized to step down the hillside. The interior layout and vertical organization of program spaces along the circulation spine informed the exterior design, thereby creating the "lines and layers" of the exterior.
  - The approach on the exterior was to break down the scale of the project through a series of banding and transitioning of materials – both on the vertical and horizontal planes. Recesses and overhangs, and in turn shadow lines, play a vital role in finessing the overall exterior composition. The project also uses exposed steel, perforated metal, distinctive surface patterns, and deliberate material transitions to take on a machine-like quality –re-emphasizing the concept of body as a machine.
  - The interior design concept was based on the systems of the human body. Similar to the body’s concealed systems (muscular, skeletal, circulatory), a building’s concealed systems (M/E/P, structural) are essential to its function. The design highlights and celebrates, not conceals, their contributions to the building’s architecture and operations.
  - The interior layout and vertical organization around the circulation spine informed the exterior design creating the formal appearance described as "lines and layers.” Brick masonry, cast stone, metal wall panels and aluminum framed windows are primary exterior materials used - a direct response to the adjacent performing arts center, while providing a unique identity. Exposed steel, perforated metal, distinctive surface patterns, deliberate material transitions and intriguing landscape demonstrate a ‘machine’ like quality – re-emphasizing the concept of body as machine.
